Perhaps you are happy with your current training strategy but would like to undertake an assessment of your fitness to help you identify weaknesses and enable you to structure your own training more efficiently.

At sportslab we have a range of options that will enable you to undertake specific testing of your physiology.  We offer the following fitness tests that can be booked directly.

Ramp Test

A cycling ramp test is a great place to start when reviewing your fitness level. It is sometimes called a Maximal Aerobic Power (MAP) test and follows the same protocol as used by British Cycling and the English Institute of Sport. The test follows an incremental ramp protocol where, after starting at a low effort level, the resistance increases at the end of each minute. The test does not end until you simply cannot go on. During this test riders are encouraged to push to their absolute limit.

This test provides an estimation of maximal aerobic function, and when combined with body weight an accurate power to weight ratio (in watts / kg). We can also identify areas of inefficiency within your aerobic system and advice on training strategies to improve these areas.

Your booking will include:

  • A personal appointment lasting up to two hours
  • Evaluation of your previous training history
  • Review of your goals
  • Undertaking a pre test warm up, the test & warm down
  • A performance review detailing the results of your test
  • Setting of power and heart rate zones
  • Identification of strengths and weaknesses

Lactate Ramp Test

When performing any form of exercise we are producing lactic acid in our muscles. When working at a lower intensity our body is able to disperse this lactic acid. However as we work harder we produce more lactic acid until we get to a point at which we are unable to remove the amount we are producing  (normally around 4 mm dl). This test aims to identify the point of lactate threshold. This  is essentially the hardest sustainable pace that you are able to maintain without tipping over into a point at which you are unable to maintain your pace. There is a strong correlation between individual time trial performance and lactate threshold. Targeting this area as a training method can be incredibly useful.

The test is performed on your own bike on a cycle ergometer. You will perform an extended version of the ramp test (as detailed above) with the exercise intensity increasing each three minutes. During each stage a blood lactate sample will be taken and recorded. Once you have completed the test the results will be explained and identification of your lactate threshold will be provided.

Your booking will include:

  • A personal appointment lasting up to two hours
  • Evaluation of your previous training history
  • Review of your goals
  • Undertaking a pre test warm up, the test & warm down
  • A performance review detailing your lactate threshold results and their relationship to power, heart rate and perceived exertion
  • Advice on specific improvement sessions.

Critical Power Test

A critical power test is now considered the key assessment session for time trialists, road races and track riders alike. This test will identify your Functional Threshold Power  It can be defined as:

“The highest exercise intensity that can be maintained for a significant period of time without fatigue”

Knowledge of a riders critical power is crucial when following a structured training plan. Our tests will enable prediction of Critical Power, Functional Threshold Power (FTP) and also Anaerobic Work Capacity. Once this test has been performed and the power numbers are identified riders are able to plan their training accordingly.

The test protocol involves a range of warm up drills before undertaking a prolonged time trial style effort. A structured warm down is then undertaken.

Your booking will include:

  • A personal appointment lasting up to two hours
  • Evaluation of your previous training history
  • Review of your goals
  • Undertaking a pre test warm up, the test & warm down
  • A performance review detailing the results of your test
  • Identification of your Critical Power figure (CP)
  • Identification of your Functional Threshold Power (FTP)
  • Identification of your threshold heart rate.
  • Advice on specific sessions to improve your Critical Power & FTP
